Sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF has called on the outgoing cabinet in a so-called ‘position paper’ to keep Dutch amateur sport open until 8 p.m. On Friday, outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that sports facilities must be empty by 5 p.m. for a period of at least three weeks. The evening lockdown will last until 5 a.m.
“Millions of Dutch people come to a standstill because of this corona measure,” NOC*NSF said. Work and school make it impossible for many people to exercise during the day, because organized sports largely take place in the evening, it appears.
The sports umbrella organization asks that sport be classified among the essential sectors. NOC*NSF is supported in this by the joint national sports associations, the Association of Sports and Municipalities (VSG) and the Platform Ondernemende Sportsproviders (POS).
“All sports associations and enterprising sports providers have shown in the past eighteen months that they can offer a safe setting. We have invested heavily in this, we work with strict protocols,” says Marc van den Tweel, general manager of NOC*NSF. “Figures from the RIVM show that infections only take place to a very limited extent within sport.”
“We realize that the package of measures is a sum in which the number of meetings must be limited,” continues Van Tweel. “We think there are better measures for this.”
