The meteoric trajectory of the wife of Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán, Emma Coronel Aispuro, in the world of organized crime and that of celebrities ended after he declared guilty of crimes related to drug trafficking.
Colonel went from being a former beauty queen surrounded by luxuries and grab all eyes during the trial of “Chapo” two years ago to be arrested in the United States last February for her alleged involvement in drug trafficking international.
An accusation of which she herself pleaded guilty on June 10 in a court in the district of Washington DC after an agreement with the United States Justice.
Coronel, who had been living a life of luxury for years, was born 31 years ago in California (USA) and had dual US and Mexican nationality.
When she was very young, she moved with her parents to La Angostura, in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico.
There, according to local media, he grew up in a context of drug trafficking and even his father, Inés Coronel Barreras, was captured in 2013 as responsible for crimes against health (drug trafficking).
He was considered the first operator of the “Chapo” and he was dedicated to the production of marijuana in the Sierra de Durango, a neighboring state of Sinaloa.
At just 17 years old, at a party in the state of Durango, the model met Joaquín Guzmán (who was 51) and began a relationship that would be formalized in an intimate wedding when she turned 18. However, the link was never publicly confirmed.
What was confirmed was the paternity of the couple, who in 2011 had twins María Joaquina and Emaly, who were born in Los Angeles.
The wife of the most wanted and famous drug trafficker in Mexico became after the marriage a symbol that portrayed the calls colloquially as “buchonas”, Mexican women who are related to someone from the drug trade and end up, on many occasions, involved in illicit businesses.
She, who had been a beauty queen at the Coffee and Guava Festival, she became an affluent woman who always wore expensive clothes and jewelry.
For all this, it was placed in the media spotlight.
Between 2018 and 2019, the trial of “Chapo” was held in New York and the former beauty queen captured the attention of reporters for her spectacular outfits and her striking daily presence.
Even some means they christened her “the Mexican Kardashian”, in reference to the American sisters entrepreneurs.
“I think that is what any wife would do in my place, be with her husband in difficult moments,” she declared in December 2018 in an exclusive interview with an American media.
A request was even made to be able to hug her husband at the beginning of the trial, but this was ultimately denied.
El “Chapo” was found guilty of drug trafficking by a jury in New York in 2019 and now he meets one life sentence in a maximum security prison in the country.
After concluding the trial, Coronel published through social networks an emotional letter in which he reiterated his love for Guzmán.
Quite a celebrity
After concluding the trial and already under the watchful eye of the press and public opinion, Coronel became an “influencer” on her Instagram account, where she was seen, for example, skiing.
In addition, his fame grew with the participation in November 2019 in the reality show “Cartel Crew”, a production that portrays the lives of relatives of people related to organized crime.
“We are normal, I consider myself a normal woman, and it happens to me a lot that people judge me without knowing me,” she said then.
He even created a clothing line based on the controversial figure of her husband.
Although for years it had been pointed out to Emma Coronel of participating in her husband’s business (and even his escapes), until now she had never been directly investigated.
But this June 10 his career as a media celebrity was cut short and it is expected that at least 10 years behind bars -although it can reach life imprisonment- after pleading guilty, between sobs, of distributing narcotics in the United States, of laundering money, and of carrying out operations with the properties of a major foreign drug trafficker.
