For the first time in Europe, a corona vaccine has been approved for children from 5 years old. It concerns the vaccine from the company Pfizer. European medicine experts have said the shot is safe enough for children between the ages of 5 and 12.
Not yet in the Netherlands
However, this does not mean that children under 12 in the Netherlands can now also receive the vaccine. Each country in Europe can decide for itself. In the Netherlands, the Health Council is still working on an advisory report on this.
If it is decided that children from the age of 5 in the Netherlands may be allowed this vaccine, they will receive a shot twice – just like adults. The difference is that children receive slightly less of the vaccine. According to experts, children also need less.
Yet children can become ill from corona, sometimes seriously. Fortunately, that chance is very small. The vaccine reduces the chance that children will become ill, and also that they are less likely to transmit the virus to someone else.
