President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) accused this Thursday that the criticism against Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, who has been singled out for her alleged lack of experience, could revolve around machismo.
The nomination of Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, revealed on Wednesday by AMLO, aroused criticism from senators of the opposition National Action Party (PAN) and some financiers who affirm that lacks “recognized competence in monetary matters“, as required by the Bank of Mexico Law.
In this regard, President López Obrador stated: “She is going to be the next governor of the Bank of Mexico because she meets the requirements and is also a responsible, honest woman. Maybe they don’t like her to be a woman, because conservatism is also very macho”, said the president in his press conference “morning”.
AMLO defended Rodríguez Ceja, current Undersecretary of Expenditures of the Ministry of Finance, by accusing the “conservatives” of “hypocrisy” because “they dress up as feminists”.
“It is a matter of judgment and also of our adversaries, they do not like anything, but it is a professional of finance, of the Public Treasury, of monetary matters because it is a matter of interpretation. Imagine, the Undersecretary of Expenditures who handles the entire budget, “López Obrador justified.
The process has also caused controversy after revealing on Tuesday that the President eliminated the candidacy of Arturo Herrera since August, his former Secretary of the Treasury, to govern the Bank of Mexico, despite having nominated him in June.
Amid the uproar, the Mexican peso has been this week at its weakest level since March, after exceeding 21 Mexican pesos per dollar.
Even so, López Obrador “took it for granted” that Rodríguez Ceja will have the endorsement of the Senate, where his party alliance controls the majority.
“No (there is plan b), because they are going to approve it, because it would be nonsense, it would be acting in bad faith, and most of the senators are responsible people,” said AMLO.
The undersecretary appeared in a video on Wednesday in which she promised to fulfill “the function established in the regulatory framework of this institution (Banxico).”
“My commitment is the fight against inflation, not touching the international reserves and complying with the autonomy of the Bank of Mexico“He promised with Rogelio Ramírez de la O, current Secretary of the Treasury.
AMLO defended this Thursday that the undersecretary has handled “the entire budget”, which is equivalent to 6 billion pesos (around 300 billion dollars), so “it does meet the requirements.”
“How could she not have experience? In addition, for some time she has been holding positions that have to do with public finances, with the Treasury, she is a very good, honest, responsible professional, but our adversaries are not going to like it. nothing, “he argued.
