The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador continues to seek an agreement with Canada to modernize its hydroelectric plants, something that the Mexican president transferred in his meeting on Thursday to his counterpart, Justin Tudreau, during a meeting in Washington.
The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, detailed after the meeting that López Obrador sent Trudeau an invitation for this purpose and that “several conversations” have already been advanced with the Québec public company Hydro-Québec.
“Canada told us that it was very interested,” said Ebrard at a press conference, explaining that Mexico is seeking the modernization and expansion of hydroelectric plants and their transmission lines. “

“In Canada, at least, there is a state company that is one of the most efficient in the world, Hydro-Québec; in fact they produce and transmit energy with very high energy levels, ”he added.
The talks with Hydro-Québec date, at least, to the end of 2018, when López Obrador invited company executives to Mexico in search of a cooperation agreement with Canada to modernize 60 hydroelectric plants and generate clean energy at a lower cost in the Latin American country.
López Obrador and Trudeau also met in a trilateral summit with US President Joe Biden, a meeting that Ebrard defined as “extraordinary.”
Amid the sea of proposals, the three North American leaders pledged to carry out concrete actions in support of joint goals on health, the economy, democracy and migration.

The Foreign Minister also explained that Washington has committed to investing in a new Mexican program that may be called Sembrando Oportunidades “which is the answer to what President López Obrador has been proposing, mainly regarding Central America and southern Mexico.”
“We are going to work with US agencies in the coming days to give details, but the most important thing is that there is already an answer,” said the official, who did not provide economic figures for the program, but assured that it will have an impact. over 540,000 people.
The trilateral summit, popularly known as that of the “three friends” and which was normally organized annually, was held for the first time since 2016, after four years of standstill during the term of Donald Trump. The next one, in 2022, will take place in Mexico, as Ebrard announced.
