He left the world of boxing and business aside to now hold a political position. The mayor of Zapotlanejo won by 12 votes, and recently Gonzalo Álvarez Barragán arrived to talk in what conditions the municipality found now that his administration has just begun.
“I am proud of what my brother represents, but I myself am building my own political career”
The also brother of the famous boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez said that his interest in politics was born because he was a citizen affected by poor attention from previous governments in Zapotlanejo: “I was an affected citizen, I had to live that in one year my House was flooded four times, I had to break a wall to get the water out and from there I started helping my neighbors because they were also affected, that’s how my desire to join politics was born ”.
The party that supports him is Morena. but he says he sees it only as a “vehicle to occupy a position that will allow him to team up with other politicians for the good of Zapotlanejo.” But his election was very controversial, as he won with only 12 votes ahead.
Gonzalo Álvarez does not deny that this triumph was partly due to the popularity and acceptance of his brother, “Of course my brother’s brand influences, of course it influences a lot. We are a brand that was created in the whole family. I am proud of what he represents, but I myself am building my own political career ”.
“My brother has greatly respected my political career, he has known how to take his distance,” said the mayor of Zapotlanejo when asked if at any time Saúl Álvarez could be seen occupying a position in his administration or at least appear at a public event.
On the subject of security, Gonzalo Álvarez said that Zapotlanejo currently has 134 police officers, of which only 10% have their certification and control and trust examinations, those that are yet to be regularized are in a hurry to have these documents since the federation gives a deadline until March next year.
Regarding his relationship so far with the Governor of Jalisco, González Álvarez admits that he has a communication and that until now he has been feeling the spirit of teaming up.
This year the famous Catrina, who in previous years had been registered for a Guinness record for being the largest in the country, will not be in Zapotlanejo. The mayor says that this decision was because making it cost more than 2,300,000 pesos, an amount that according to him he will use for more urgent public services for the municipality.
Finally, Álvarez Barragán says that he feels the need to make a report in his first 100 days to inform the inhabitants of Zapotlanejo of the changes that have been made in this first period of his administration, including the certifications of the police and more resources for public services.
