On January 10, the then Vice Minister of Transportation, Carmen Ligia Valderrama, today ICT Minister, assured that the accident rates in Cali and the department are the highest in the country.
Valderrama pointed out that, during the end of the year, in Cali, 288 people lost their lives and there were 120 motor vehicle accidents, despite the fact that the reduction in the mortality rate was 6%, 19 cases less than in 2019.
According to the accident data presented by the National Road Safety Observatory, the vice minister concluded that the department of Valle has the highest number of deaths, with a participation between 13 and 17% of the national total. He also said that in the country there was an 11% reduction in road accidents compared to last year, considering that 3,685,176 vehicles were mobilized.
To prevent the increase and continuity of these figures, Valderrama advised that, during high seasons, it is necessary to remember that many families move along the roads of the country and security measures must be respected. He also suggested scheduling the mobilization and making technical-mechanical checks on the vehicle prior to the travel date. Other suggestions are to leave early, get up early on the way back, do not exceed the speed limits, respect the signs, do not drive under the influence of alcohol and check the state of the roads through Invías line # 767 or your account. from Twitter.
Likewise, he reiterated compliance with biosafety measures such as the use of masks, distancing to avoid agglomerations, hand washing that, if not possible, can be replaced by the use of alcohol or disinfectant gel. Keeping windows open and constant ventilation are key to preventing the spread of the virus, he said.
With the reduction of the speed limit to 50 km / h on main highways and other corridors in the cities of Cali and Medellín, positive results are expected in the reduction of accident rates. The measure was also adopted to improve constant mobility and road traffic, since “we are in a country where there is no awareness of speed control.”
