After the confrontation between criminal groups in Puerto Morelos that left two people dead, the Attorney General of Quintana Roo, Óscar Montes de Oca, offered an advance in the investigations, in which he affirmed that 12 drug gangs operate on the beaches of the Riviera Maya in the state.
Montes de Oca highlighted that more than 140 thousand tourists arrive in Quintana Roo every week, most of whom are distributed between Cancun and the Riviera Maya, so there is a great attraction for entrepreneurs who invest in tourism, but also for groups drug dealers who see a great opportunity to sell narcotics in the area.
The Prosecutor revealed that of the 12 criminal gangs that operate in the Riviera Maya, 10 are in Tulum and 2 more in Puerto Morelos, the latter were responsible for the last episode of violence that took place on the beaches of the state, in which the Drug traffickers clashed outside a hotel.

In 14 days, two armed attacks have claimed the lives of 4 people in the area, two of them foreign tourists who were vacationing in the place. Montes de Oca pointed out that the “demand and supply of drugs” are direct causes of the increase in violence in the state.
On the afternoon of Thursday, November 4, 15 subjects entered the parking lot of the Azul Beach Resort hotel to reach the beach of Bahía Petempich, where they shot at two members of the opposing group, one of them died on the spot and the another sought refuge in the hotel, and later died inside, the attackers later fled in a boat.
Several national and foreign tourists posted videos of the incident on social networks, Keith Jackson, an English visitor assured that “we are not sure of coming back after this”, in addition to stating that, “we are all concerned that something will happen while we are there” according to information of the AP.
Witnesses to the incident told the authorities that hours before the attack they noticed that five masked men were on the beach asking questions of security personnel and a lifeguard, as they were allegedly requesting information to find the members of the rival gang, who were hiding under the disguise of street vendors.
Likewise, on October 20, two foreign women were killed after being hit by the crossfire of a shooting in a restaurant in Tulum, a city located about 100 kilometers from Puerto Morelos.

During the confrontation between criminal gangs, Anjali Ryot, originally from India, and Jennifer Henzold from Germany, died, and three were injured at the scene, for which nine people have been arrested so far.
Antonio Chaves, president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, has expressed his concern about the recent incidents in the area, as various establishments have registered cancellations in recent days due to episodes of violence that have claimed the lives of 4 people in 14 days.
After the October 20 incident, the Government of Mexico has sent 450 elements of the National Guard, the Mexican Army and the Navy to Quintana Roo, who arrived in the state in the first days of November. Carlos Joaquín, governor of the entity, has asked the federal authorities for an increase in the number of security personnel in the territory.
For their part, the hotels in the Riviera Maya have taken the initiative to connect their camera systems to the police barracks, in addition to the fact that some are considering hiring private security guards who carry firearms.
