The chance that the visitor carried bird flu and infected animals was not great, the Ministry of Agriculture wrote in a statement on Wednesday evening. Yet all the animals are killed because the farm is in an area with many more farms. There are 277 companies within a radius of 10 kilometers, according to the ministry. Testing the organic chickens would not be an alternative because the animals can be contagious before the infection can be diagnosed.
At the moment, a confinement obligation is in force throughout the Netherlands due to the outbreak in Zeewolde. Zoos, petting zoos and private individuals, among others, must also prevent certain bird species from coming into contact with sick animals or their faeces. 36,000 animals have been culled on the farm in Zeewolde.
