The production of Wheel of Time is so big that Amazon built a huge new studio complex for it in Prague. The complex is named after the book’s author, Robert Jordan.
GQ reports that producer David Brown said traditional studios in Los Angeles, Atlanta, London, Budapest and Prague were already fully booked. “The show is incredibly ambitious and creative,” Brown continues. “How do we fill that in? That’s why a gigantic building has now been erected.”
Instead of looking beyond a studio, Amazon made the Jordan Studios in Prague. It bought an industrial building and turned it into a movie studio. There is a visual unit, stunt gym, costume department, writers offices, accounting and “soundstages the size of a football field”.
This studio allowed Amazon to take more risk in making the series. For example, the message reports that an entire village called Two Rivers has been built for the production. This was then completely razed to the ground because this was necessary in a next scene.
According to Amazon, the scale of the production must compete with productions such as Game of Thrones. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reportedly wanted his own Game of Thrones at Amazon. Executive producer Mike Weber adds that the series will visually resemble the final seasons of Game of Thrones. Wheel of Time has already been estimated to cost $10 million per episode to make.
Wheel of Time will be available on Prime Video on November 19.
