On Sunday, many dozens of NEC hooligans attacked the police after a lost game against Vitesse. That happened in the Goffertpark near the NEC stadium. Officers and police horses were injured. A police bus was wrecked. Also before the match, supporters of Vitesse and NEC were already at each other’s hair. “Enough is enough”, according to the mayor of Nijmegen. “It is a disgrace to our city. A line has been crossed.”
Police arrested 22 rioters on Sunday and expect to make many more arrests. The Public Prosecution Service is holding a summary trial for some of the arrested men, all of whom come from Arnhem, Nijmegen and the surrounding area. According to Bruls, refusing from the public at the Gelderse derby is also an option that is being considered. He wants to take more measures, but is waiting for a report from the police about the events. It is expected to arrive later this week.
Bruls’ statements have surprised the NEC club management. “With such texts we anticipate the evaluation that has yet to take place and expectations are imposed with very far-reaching consequences. We do not think that is the intention,” said spokesman Nick van der Cammen. “Thursday will be evaluated by the triangle and us for the first time. As the mayor has said, there is now extra pressure on this. As NEC, we communicated from the outset that we did not want to get ahead of ourselves and not jump to conclusions. We’ll stick to that. These kinds of matters should first be discussed in the triangle. That makes sense, because that’s how you should communicate with each other and not in public.”
Earlier, Bruls expressed his dissatisfaction with a large banner on which the slogan ‘Pure Haat’ was written. NEC supporters rolled out the canvas in the Goffert Stadium on Sunday at the start of the match against Vitesse. The banner also showed a figure that shot at a Vitesse doll. Bruls says he still has something to discuss with NEC.
