Pope John Paul I is beatified

The officially recognized miracle concerns an Argentinian girl who was critically ill who prayed to the late Pope in 2011. She was cured in a scientifically inexplicable way, according to the Vatican. The miraculous healing is a condition of being beatified. After beatification, John Paul I can be canonized.

The real name of Pope John Paul I was Albino Luciani. He was elected to succeed Pope Paul VI on August 26, 1978, and was the last Italian pope. He was also known as the Pope with a smile. Pope John Paul I was of poor and humble descent, did not want a pope coronation after his election and liked frugality.

As patriarch of Venice, he had previously protested strongly against the sale of a regional bank by the director of the Vatican bank Archbishop Paul Marcinkus to the infamous Banco Ambrosiano of the later allegedly murdered “banker of God” Roberto Calvi.

Speculation

There has been much speculation about the unexpected and sudden death of John Paul I. According to British author and investigative journalist David Yallop, he was poisoned because he wanted to crack down on serious malpractice within the Vatican bank. The American Archbishop Marcinkus, the Italian Freemasonry Lodge P2 and the Sicilian Mafia played an important role in this.
