Players in the largest American professional league are not required by the NBA to be vaccinated, but unvaccinated players do have to deal with testing and restrictions around games.
“It’s not about the Nets, it’s not about the NBA, it’s not about politics,” Irving said. “It has nothing to do with that. It’s about the freedom to decide things for yourself.”
Not yet retired
According to Nets director Sean Marks, Irving is not intended to go to another club. “Hopefully we get Kyrie back so we can welcome him with open arms,” Marks said on Tuesday after the decision.
Irving also emphasized that he does not want to stop just yet. “I’m not retiring yet. This way I don’t want to stop playing basketball. I want to inspire many young people to become better than me.”
