The race director of the International Federation of Motorsports (FIA), the governing body of Formula 1, Michael Masi, does not rule out the possibility of moving the qualifying session of the Russian Grand Prix from Saturday to Sunday due to heavy rains in Sochi, after the free third had to be canceled.
“If qualifying cannot be carried out today as we have seen in the past, we will qualify on Sunday morning,” Masi said this Saturday before the third and final practice session in Russia.
A Formula 2 race was scheduled for Saturday morning and open track activities, but was repeatedly delayed and then postponed due to weather conditions.
Masi explained that everything would be ready from an operational point of view and the FIA will see the day step by step, with F1 as a priority. Formula 2 and Formula 3 events were also scheduled for Saturday in Sochi.
“The determining factor this afternoon will be the light. The local sunset is around 6.15 pm. But with weather conditions like this, the light diminishes much earlier. That will finally be our cutoff point,” Masi explained.
