Thousands of people have participated in the early morning of this Saturday in a second massive bottle in the Plaza de Espanya and Maria Cristina Avenue in Barcelona, coinciding with the La Mercè festivities, which has led to serious altercations from four in the morning: fights between the concentrates with injured, throwing bottles at the police, broken windows of the facade and destruction in the Palacio de Congresos de la Fira (which for months has been a vaccination center against the coronavirus), and burned trees and cars. If the first day the bottle brought together thousands of people, 15,000 according to the City Council, tonight the party spread with more than 40,000 people throughout the Maria Cristina Avenue, twice the space. The police have arrested 20 people and the health services treated 43 wounded.
The deputy mayor for security, Albert Batlle, has described the events as very serious while the Fira de Barcelona organization has reported that they are already working to repair the damage. After midnight, scenes of vandalism and fights began to be seen, and the situation became tense and complicated as dawn progressed. There were some stabbings and fights with glass bottles. Traffic signs were also uprooted, furniture thrown at the avenue fountains, and thefts of mobile phones and wallets. Meanwhile, the Csif union has issued a first statement in which they speak of police vehicles with broken windows and at least 11 arrested and 11 injured in the fights. This union cites attendance at the bottle in 25,000 people.

The Guardia Urbana established a perimeter around the Plaza de Espanya at approximately midnight, preventing the comings and goings of the people who participated in the party from cutting off traffic and also concentrating in the center of the square. However, the participants, many more than the night before, moved to the Avenida de María Cristina, in addition to the nearby streets. Around 3 a.m. the police lifted the perimeter, allowing them to cross the road again. At that time the fights also began. In one of them, a young man was treated after being hit with a bottle.

The Plaza de Espanya, however, was not the only place to drink bottles in the city. Also, and for the second night, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) square. “We have been at home for two years. When we see the bottles on television we are always scandalized, but people keep going out, they don’t open the discos to us. If they let me pay my ticket and my antigen test, I would. This is a riot, I admit it ”, explained a 25-year-old girl, who did not want to give her name, sitting next to the Macba.
“There are phenomena that until we recover normality are difficult to prevent,” said the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Jordi Martí, on Friday, who took it for granted that they will be repeated during the festivities. The mayor pointed out that the concentration of the first night “had no direct link with La Mercè’s programming. It is a phenomenon with young people who have not enjoyed the party for two years and there is a need to go out, as we recover normality it will fade, we must link it to these difficult years that have affected young people ”.
