Flushing Meadows (New York, USA), Sep 6 (EFE) .- The Czech Barbora Krejcikova, eighth favorite, who debuts at the United States Open, won at dawn on Monday by 6-3 and 7- 6 (4) to the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza, ninth seeded, and got the pass to the quarterfinals.
The duel between the two tennis players, the third as professionals, now with an advantage for Krejcikova (2-1), current champion of Roland Garros, which lasted one hour and 53 minutes, closed the seventh day of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season.
After a first set, in which Krejcikova won the first three games, Muguruza tied the score at 3-3 and again the Czech tennis player finished with another three in her favor. The second was the one that left the best tennis when both made a “break” until taking it to the tiebreaker.
Again, the 27-year-old Muguruza, who played his ninth Open, was on the verge of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time, after again playing erratic tennis with decisive unforced errors that cost him elimination.
Muguruza’s best classification, a two-time Grand Slam winner, has been the fourth round she achieved this year and in 2017.
Krejcikova’s rival in the quarterfinals will be second-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalakenka, who had no trouble easily winning 6-3, 6-3 against Belgian Elise Mertens, 15th seed.
In other matches on the day of the women’s competition, the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, fifth seed, beat the Romanian Simona Halep, twelfth seed, in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3.
The Canadian revelation, the 19-year-old Leylah Fernández, who had eliminated the current champion of the tournament, the Japanese Noemi Osaka, third seed, also beat the German veteran, Angelique Kerber, the sixteenth seed, whom she defeated by 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-2.
Fernández, who reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, will be Svitolina’s next rival.
