CBS: excess mortality last week
In the week from May 31 to June 6, it is estimated that almost 3,000 people died in the Netherlands. In that week, about two hundred people died more than expected during this period, so there was an excess of mortality. That is more than two hundred more than the week before. It reports that Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Friday based on an analysis of preliminary death rates.
Statistics Netherlands reports that last week more people in need of long-term care died compared to the week before. It is also estimated that just over 1,600 people aged eighty or older died last week. In addition, about 950 people aged 65 or older died. The number of deaths of people under the age of 65 was 400.
According to the CBS, mainly elderly people died in that week. Two hundred fewer people died compared to the week before. The researchers report that from mid-September to mid-February there was excess mortality. In the weeks that followed, the death toll was about as high as previously expected. Last week there was an excess of mortality because the death toll was higher than the CBS estimate.

- US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the United States 500 million vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech to donate to developing countries. According to the American pharmaceutical company and the German partner BioNTech, the vaccines are sold for a price at which they themselves do not make a profit.
- Both people from the birth year 1989 and 1990 are Thursday called to make an appointment for their corona vaccination. On Thursday mornings, the call for a vaccination appointment initially remained with people from the year 1989, but in the evening the RIVM reported that those born in 1990 can also make an appointment.
- A resolution adopted by the European Parliament shows that a majority of MEPs want the patents on corona vaccines and other medical devices are temporarily suspended. The resolution allows the European Commission to negotiate with the World Trade Organization about the patents.
- There was again a decrease in the number of corona patients in the hospital. A total of 783 patients with corona were in hospital on Thursday, 51 fewer than a day earlier. Furthermore, 1,607 new positive corona tests were reported to RIVM between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning.
