Former hockey and athletics coach Cees Koppelaar has passed away at the age of 81. Koppelaar was also a running trainer of great athletes such as Johan Cruijff, Marco van Basten and Teun de Nooijer. He died last Monday in his hometown Akersloot.
As an athlete, Koppelaar achieved the national team in the sixties as a member in the 800 meters and the 4×400 meters. Koppelaar really made a name for himself in the training profession. After a period as an athletics coach, Koppelaar was recommended to Ajax coach Rinus Michels.
Koppelaar quickly became popular in Amsterdam and taught the golden Ajax of Johan Cruijff, Sjaak Swart and Piet Keizer, among others, the techniques of running. In addition, he was also employed by the athletics union as national coach of the middle distance runners.
