George Kooymans has the progressive muscle disease ALS. The news about the legendary guitarist of Golden Earring, who is already alive, hits fans, but also many people who have little or nothing to do with his band and rock music.
But most of all with Kooymans himself, of course, who will no longer be able to enter the stage after almost sixty years of performing. Many people, known and unknown, sympathize with the musician on social media.
George Kooymans disease was suddenly on the street
The sad news about the sick George Kooymans was passed through the page this morning Private in the Telegraph brought. His manager did not say anything about the nature of the illness. The Golden Earring founder himself told it during the day AD. The guitarist says he can no longer perform. “Not as it looks now. Now I can’t and it’s a progressive disease. Unfortunately, performing is no longer possible. ” The end of Golden Earring seems to be over after an impressively long period. Singer Barry Hay and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk have indicated that they will quit the band.
“We would have liked to release something ourselves in due course, but it is now on the street. Seriously ill, it was written and then people speculate about what is going on. I am indeed ill, I have ALS ”, he tells the newspaper. “It is a very bad report and I am not really in the mood to say much about it. I am being treated at the university hospital in Leuven. That’s it.”
What is the muscle disease ALS?
ALS is a disease of the nerve cells that control the muscles of the human body. The working of the muscles slowly deteriorates. In ALS, more and more muscles are gradually affected, except for the heart muscle. Its full name is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the cause has still not been found. With former football player Fernando Ricksen, the disease has had a face in recent years. He passed away in September 2019. The ALS Netherlands Foundation is known for its commercials. People who have died of ALS are advertised with catchy quotes to generate attention for the disease. “Continue my struggle,” for example. These persons have of course given permission for this. In January, a TV commercial with Marieke Bakker caught the eye. This thirty-something is still among us and told a powerful story. In the Netherlands about 1500 people have ALS.
George Kooyman has been a guitarist for a long time
George Kooymans founded the band The Tornados in 1961 together with his neighbor Rinus Gerritsen. The boys, 13 and 15 years old, soon found out that a band with that name already existed and chose a new one: The Golden Earrings. Later the last s was dropped. In the years that followed, Barry Hay and Cesar Zuiderwijk strengthened the rock band, which was successful at home and abroad. Kooymans, together with Boudewijn de Groot and Henny Vrienten, also form the trio Vreemd Kostgangers.
